Burke County Firefighters Association hosted a boot drive for MDA Jerry's Kids on Saturday August 8, 2009. Fire departments from all over the county pulled together for this event at various locations. Glen Alpine Fire Department was one of the departments which participated. Some of the other departments included Salem, Icard Township, Lovelady, Triple Community, George Hilderbran and several others.
The event kicked off early in the week at the Burke County Fair and at 8am on Saturday at Walmart, Fiddlers Run, Family Dollar in Glen Alpine and other places accross the county. Firefighters stood in parking lots, street intersections, and local businesses to help raise money for this event. The overall event was a success. The overall total has not been released yet, however we will be updating as the total comes in. As of Saturday evening Glen Alpine had raised $500.00 for the cause.
This event is one that will be happening annually. This is a program that firefighters accross the country have been helping with for many years. Year after year we are able to reach out in the community and help make a difference in the lives of children who suffer from Musclar Dystrophy. With the dwendling economy, people are skiddish of giving money to organizations like these. People have been took advantage of in the past by organizations, HOWEVER, MDA is an organization that is true to there word and all of the proceeds raised goes torwards helping fight Muscular Distrophy. So when you see that firefighter standing in the intersection or at the door of walmart, please dont say "Why do they have there hand out? I paid my taxes." because the money that we raise during this boot drive goes to MDA and supporting Jerry's Kids. So thank you again for those who have donated.
If you are interested in donating anytime of the year go to www.mda.org/help to find out how.
